The American educational system is the only one that allows the combination of competitive sports with university studies. Additionally, through athletic scholarships, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. In many cases, there are also opportunities to combine academic scholarships to further reduce overall costs.  

Schools offer athletic scholarships in the United States to their team members, allowing athletes to finance their studies through sports.  

This opportunity enables athletes to experience numerous advantages compared to the Spanish system: combining studies and sports, traveling throughout the United States with the sports team for free, obtaining an academic degree from a U.S. institution, learning perfect English, meeting people from many different countries, and living unforgettable experiences. For all these reasons, athletes gain access to a world of possibilities through sports. 

Each sports league has maximum scholarships to distribute, and within these limits, the school allocates the funds for full and partial athletic scholarships to team athletes. Typically, athletes need to be among the best on the team to receive an athletic scholarship in the United States and Canada.  

Other opportunities, called “walk-ons,” allow players to join the team without receiving an athletic scholarship. After a year in this position, depending on the player’s performance, they may earn an athletic scholarship for subsequent years.

Here is the process for obtaining an athletic scholarship at an American educational institution:  

First Part: Athlete’s Work 

• Achieve the Highest Athletic Level Possible:
• The higher the athlete’s level, the better their chances of obtaining an athletic scholarship in the United States and Canada.  
• A higher level also means a wider range of options to choose from.  
• It’s essential to plan athletics training and competition schedules to achieve the best possible results.  

2. Achieve the Highest Academic Level Possible:  

• Focusing on academics is crucial to attain the best results.  
• Higher academic performance opens up more options and increases the chance of receiving additional academic scholarships, reducing annual costs.  
• Proper preparation for TOEFL and SAT exams is fundamental.  

Second Part: Awex Education’s Role

It is crucial to contact Awex Education well in advance to start the process early, increasing the chances of securing an athletic scholarship in the United States or Canada and providing more options to choose from. We recommend starting the process 1-2 years before the intended start date.

• Create an academic and athletic profile for the athlete to share with coaches.  
• Contact Schools:
• Identify schools that match the athlete’s profile and family preferences. 
• Negotiate with coaches and institutions to secure the best scholarships and conditions.  

Present Options: 

• Provide a report with several options, including details such as the institution’s name, location, size, academic and athletic levels, tuition without a scholarship, scholarship amount, and annual cost.  
• Assist in Decision-Making:
• Guide and advise the athlete and family in selecting the institution.  
• Complete Administrative Procedures:
• Admission process for academic leagues (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA). 
• Submission of grades, exam results (SAT, TOEFL), and other documentation.
• Settle Logistics: 
• Arrange meal plans and accommodations. 
• Obtain health insurance. 
• Process student visas. 
• Organize flights and arrival logistics.  

Provide Continuous Support: 

• Offer assistance throughout the athlete’s stay in the United States or Canada, including school changes, questions, or paperwork.  

Prepare for the Future: 

• In their third or fourth year of university, provide interested students with a course at a British university to prepare them for the job market and assist in securing job offers.
