We answer all your questions 😚
Who can participate in the one-year academic program abroad?
The main selection criteria for admission are: being a high school student in your home country, your English level, your age, having school grades above 6.5, your athletic level, and your motivation to be an exchange student.
Keep in mind that we only accept a limited number of students each year, so you should make every effort beforehand to improve your English skills and academic performance. We assure you — your hard work will be worth it.
What will happen if I get sick while I'm away?
First of all, remember that you won’t be alone. At your school, there will be medical staff to assess your condition, and you will also have local support available at all times.
All of our programs include a comprehensive medical and accident insurance policy in the program fee. Before your departure to the United States, we will explain exactly what to do if you ever need to use the insurance — it’s simple and secure.
Will I be able to travel during my stay?
Yes, as long as your legal guardians give their authorization. During your school year in the United States, you will likely have several opportunities to travel and discover new places.
Your school may organize excursions you can join, or your local coordinator might suggest trips or activities with other international students in the area.
Will I be able to make new friends as a foreigner?
Although it may feel challenging at first, you’ll soon meet many people. Our students always say how easy it is to make friends, socialize, and how friendly and welcoming people usually are.
Gradually, you’ll start making new friends at your High School, on sports teams, or in the clubs and activities you join. Many American schools that accept exchange students have welcome programs designed to help international students integrate more easily. It’s also common to have a “student buddy”, who is responsible for showing you around campus and helping you settle in.
Believe me — the hardest part won’t be making friends, it will be saying goodbye when you return home.
Will I be able to return to Spain to spend Christmas or any other holiday period?
With a J1 exchange student visa, you wouldn’t be able to. Luckily, we work with the F1 visa, which allows you to return to Spain during your vacation periods and also lets your parents visit you.
If you don't get B1, could you still go on exchange for your first year of high school?
To study in the United States, you will need to take certain exams, as Spanish qualifications are not directly recognized. Depending on the student’s level, you may take the Duolingo, TOEFL, or SAT exam.
Is it possible to obtain a full scholarship?
While it’s possible, it’s not very common, as full scholarships are rare. You and your family should consider whether you can make an investment of between $15,000 and $20,000.
What does your program include?
Our program includes housing, meals, tuition, extracurricular activities or your chosen sport, and insurance.
Can I apply for a scholarship if I am not Spanish?
At Awex, we work with students from all over the world.
What is the difference between an F1 visa and a J1 visa?
On one hand, the J1 visa is granted by the U.S. government to a limited number of students so they can study in the United States for an academic year. However, students cannot choose their location or school.
With a J1 visa, the American host family selects the international student who will live with them for the upcoming year, based on the personality and interests described in the student’s application letter. Host families welcome students voluntarily. The school is then assigned based on the family’s location, so the student cannot choose the state, area, or school.
The main characteristic of this visa is its lower cost, making it an economical option for families with a tighter budget who want to give their children the opportunity to study a year in the United States.
On the other hand, the F1 visa is more expensive. Students can choose which school to attend based on the activities offered or the state/area they prefer. Once the school is selected, a host family is assigned nearby, or the student may have the option to live in the school dormitory.
Host families for F1 students receive financial compensation (although not very high) for hosting the student during their academic stay in the United States.
What do I need beforehand to gain admission to an American university?
Coaches assess an athlete’s sports level using several factors:
Official results or times
National and international competitions
Demonstration video
Awex Education evaluation
Using all this information, at Awex Education we evaluate each athlete and their family, and work with schools that match their athletic and academic level, providing good opportunities to obtain an athletic scholarship and join the team.
What course can I study in the United States?
You can study any level of ESO or Bachillerato, although it is most common to enroll from 3rd year of ESO onwards.
Can I choose the city I want to go to or my school?
With an F1 visa for a private school, there is much more flexibility, allowing you to choose the state, the school, and live in the school dormitory.
When should you start the process?
It is recommended to start them in September or October of the previous year, as this allows enough time to prepare all procedures and exams in advance, ensuring there are no unexpected issues.
What is the selection process for acceptance into the program?
At Awex, we will conduct a personal interview to assess your English level, athletic and academic performance, and your motivation to take on this experience.
Afterwards, we will send you a scholarship proposal at no cost and with no obligation. If the proposal suits you, we will prepare a contract, which must be signed by both parties. Once the contract is signed, we will begin the process of finding the school that best fits your profile. We will select three options, from which the final school will send you your letter of acceptance.
At Awex, we will guide you before, during, and after the entire process.
What is the average level of English required to study in the US?
You should have an intermediate level that allows you to communicate with your teachers and classmates. Don’t worry if you’re not fluent — improving your fluency is one of the goals you will achieve through this experience.
When does the course start?
It depends on the state you live in, but in general, classes start between mid-August and early September and end throughout June.
Will there be more international students at the school?
Yes, you will be with a small number of students from different nationalities. At Awex, we ensure we work with schools that have a low percentage of Spanish-speaking international students, so the experience is fully immersive.
Which subjects should I choose in order to have the course validated?
ChatGPT Plus
The Ministry of Education regulates the validation of studies completed abroad. You will need to enroll in a minimum of four mandatory subjects and complete your course with some of the many electives offered by the U.S. education system. At Awex, we provide guidance throughout the process so you know exactly which subjects to take, ensuring there are no issues when validating your credits in Spain.
Is a visa required to study in the US, and who processes it?
Yes, we will work with the F1 visa. At Awex, we guide you through the entire application process to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Who will pick me up when I arrive at my destination?
Most commonly, a representative from your school will be waiting for you at the departure gate. You won’t need to worry about anything except finding your gate at the airport, and upon arrival, someone will already be there to meet you.
Are there any scholarships available to study in the US?
At Awex, we secure substantial scholarships thanks to both the students’ profiles and the partnership agreements we have with the schools.
