We answer all your questions 😚
Why the United States and Canada?
The American education system is the only one in the world that allows students to combine competitive sports with university studies. In addition, thanks to athletic scholarships, student-athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. In many cases, it is even possible to combine athletic and academic scholarships to further reduce total costs.
Schools in the United States offer sports scholarships to members of their athletic teams, allowing student-athletes to finance their education through sports.
Thanks to this opportunity, athletes can enjoy an experience that offers many advantages over the Spanish system: balancing academics and athletics, traveling for free across the U.S. with their team, earning an academic degree from an American institution, mastering English, meeting people from all over the world, and living unforgettable experiences.
For all these reasons, a world of opportunities opens up for athletes through sports.
Sports scholarships in the United States and Canada
Each sports league has a maximum number of scholarships to award, and within those limits, the school awards the money in scholarships as it sees fit.
Coaches at schools distribute the money in full and partial athletic scholarships to team members. Normally, you must be among the best on the team to receive an athletic scholarship. There are also other opportunities called walk-ons, which allow players to be part of the team without receiving an athletic scholarship in the United States and Canada. After a year in this position, depending on the player’s performance, they may earn an athletic scholarship for the following years.
How does the process of obtaining athletic scholarships in the United States and Canada work?
The goal of Awex Education is to ensure that athletes from around the world can access an educational institution in the United States or Canada with an athletic and/or academic scholarship. For this reason, we search for the best schools for each athlete, as well as the highest possible athletic and/or academic scholarship.
Here we explain the process of obtaining an athletic scholarship at an American educational institution. This first stage is where the athlete must work to achieve the best athletic and academic results:
Achieve the highest possible athletic level: The higher the athlete’s level, the greater their chances of earning an athletic scholarship in the United States or Canada. Additionally, they will have more options to choose from. It’s important to plan track and field training and competition schedules to achieve the best possible marks.
Achieve the highest possible academic level: It’s essential to focus on academics to reach the best possible academic level. This will open up more opportunities, including academic scholarships that can reduce annual costs. Proper preparation for the TOEFL and SAT exams is fundamental.
The second part of the process is handled by Awex Education. It is very important to contact Awex Education well in advance and begin preparing early. This way, we increase the chances of obtaining a sports scholarship in the United States or Canada, providing more available options to choose from. We recommend starting the process 1 to 2 years before the intended start date in the U.S. or Canada.
We analyze each case individually, assessing the athlete’s athletic level, academic level, and family expectations to determine their chances of obtaining a track and field scholarship in the United States. At Awex Education, we conduct this FREE evaluation with no obligation, meeting with the athlete and their family to explain the real possibilities. Once the family decides to begin the process, we take care of the following steps:
We study each athlete’s individual case — athletic level, academic level, and preferences regarding the school — and look for the best options that match the family’s goals and profile (athletic, academic, and financial).
We create a personal tracking sheet for each athlete, outlining the steps to follow, exam dates, preparation plans (depending on league focus), and short-, medium-, and long-term goals.
We offer support for SAT and TOEFL exam registration.
We provide guidance for creating the athletic video, including advice on how to make an effective one — since coaches rely heavily on it for recruiting. We handle the final editing of the athlete’s video.
Once the final video is ready, we create an academic and athletic profile for the athlete to send to college coaches.
We begin contacting schools that match the athlete’s and family’s preferences. We collaborate with most educational institutions in the U.S. and Canada, across all states, depending on the athlete’s profile.
We negotiate with each coach or school to obtain the best possible scholarship and conditions for each athlete.
We present a detailed report with multiple options to allow time for decision-making. The report includes: school name, location, size, academic level, athletic level, price without scholarship, scholarship amount, and annual cost.
We provide several options within the set budget, ensuring families can choose among multiple alternatives.
We advise and guide the athlete and family in the final selection of the school, though the final decision always rests with the family.
We manage the signing of the final offer from the chosen educational institution.
We handle the academic league admission process (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).
We complete the admissions process with the selected school (sending grades, exam results, admissions paperwork, etc.).
We organize meal and housing plans for the athlete.
We assist with obtaining medical insurance in the U.S. or Canada.
We manage the student visa process for both countries.
We arrange flights and arrival logistics so that someone greets the athlete upon arrival.
We provide arrival support and guidance, answering questions related to money transfers, bank cards, or first-day logistics in the U.S. or Canada.
We assist with on-campus job opportunities.
We offer support throughout the athlete’s entire stay in the U.S. or Canada for anything they might need — school changes, questions, paperwork — all at no extra cost.
When students reach their third or fourth year of university, we offer interested students a specialized course at a British university that helps prepare them for the professional world and assists in finding job opportunities.
Beyond all this, a key factor that sets our service apart is our personal approach. We maintain constant communication with our athletes and their families via WhatsApp or phone calls, and in case of emergencies, we can be contacted at any time, even outside office hours.
Academic requirements
Another important factor in securing a good educational institution is the academic component — high school grades, SAT scores, and TOEFL results. If two students have a similar athletic level but significant differences academically, the coach will usually offer the athletic scholarship to the better student academically.
This is because students must meet certain minimum requirements, making the academic side just as important as athletics in several aspects:
Athletic eligibility: Students must meet minimum grade and exam requirements to be accepted into athletic leagues.
Admission requirements: To be accepted by schools, athletes must meet academic standards on the SAT and TOEFL exams.
Academic scholarships: Students can also earn academic scholarships in addition to athletic ones, increasing their total scholarship amount. To qualify for academic scholarships, strong grades and solid SAT and TOEFL results are essential.
Therefore, the higher the grades, the more options the athlete will have and the greater the amount of scholarship money offered by the institution.
Each school or coach has different academic requirements. That’s why, at Awex Education, we analyze each student’s academic and athletic profile to find the best possible match for every athlete.
Is everything 100% validated?
At Awex Education, we take care of all the documentation management to ensure that the course validation process is a success.
Are the British B1, B2, and C1 exam models valid? What test do they require? Is it preferable to take the TOEFL or the IELTS?
British exams are generally not accepted by universities; the most common ones are Duolingo, TOEFL, and IELTS. Any of the three are valid, although the latter two are more prestigious due to their higher level of difficulty and longer duration.
