The institutions offer athletics scholarships in the United States, for their team members, which allow athletes to fund their studies through athletics.

Thanks to this opportunity, athletes can live an experience that provides many advantages compared to the Spanish system: balancing studies and sports, traveling completely for free across the United States with the sports team, obtaining an academic degree from a U.S. institution, learning perfect English, meeting people from many different countries, living unforgettable experiences… For all these reasons, athletes are presented with a world of possibilities thanks to athletics.

Each sports league has a maximum number of athletics scholarships to distribute, within these limits, the institution grants the scholarship funds they deem appropriate.

The coaches at educational institutions distribute athletics scholarships, both full and partial, among the athletes on the team. Normally, you must be among the best on the team to receive an athletics scholarship. There are also other opportunities called “walk-ons,” which allow players to join the team but without receiving an athletics scholarship in the United States and Canada. After one year in this position, depending on the player’s performance, they may earn an athletics scholarship for the following years.

The number of athletics scholarships available at each educational institution varies by institution. Each sports league has a maximum number of athletics scholarships that they can offer, but they may offer fewer scholarships than that limit if they choose to do so.

A clear example is the universities forming the Ivy League (prestigious academic universities such as Harvard), which do not offer sports scholarships.

Moreover, athletics is a sport where coaches can divide the number of athletics scholarships among the team members. For example, in NCAA Division I, men’s track and field coaches can divide the value of 12.6 scholarships among as many athletes as they want.

Women’s athletics, on the other hand, in NCAA Division I is a sport that has a maximum of 18 scholarships, so if the athlete has the right level, they may be able to get a full athletics scholarship.
