Do you have any questions?
The American educational system is the only one that allows you to combine competitive sports with university studies. Moreover, thanks to a bowling scholarship, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. Often, there are even opportunities to add academic scholarships to further reduce the total costs.
Schools in the United States and Canada offer bowling scholarships to their team members, allowing athletes to finance their studies through bowling.
This opportunity offers athletes many advantages over the Spanish system: the ability to combine studies and sports, travel across the United States and Canada with the team at no cost, earn an academic degree from an institution in the U.S. or Canada, learn perfect English, meet people from many different countries, and live unforgettable experiences. For all these reasons, bowling opens up a world of possibilities for athletes.
Each sports league has a maximum number of bowling scholarships to distribute, and within those limits, the school decides how much money to allocate in scholarships.
Coaches at these schools distribute full and partial bowling scholarships to the team’s athletes. Usually, you have to be among the best on the team to receive a bowling scholarship. There are also other opportunities called “walk-ons,” which allow players to join the team without receiving a bowling scholarship in the U.S. or Canada. After a year in this position, depending on the player’s performance, they may earn a scholarship for the following years.
The number of bowling scholarships available at each school varies. Each sports league has a maximum number of bowling scholarships they can offer, but schools may choose to offer fewer scholarships than the limit.
A clear example is the universities in the Ivy League (prestigious academic institutions like Harvard), which do not offer athletic scholarships.
Additionally, bowling is a sport where coaches can divide the number of scholarships among team members. Universities competing in NCAA Division 3 cannot offer athletic scholarships, so they do not offer bowling scholarships, but other types of financial aid or academic scholarships may be available.
Awex Education’s goal is to make it easier for bowlers to gain access to a school in the U.S. or Canada with a bowling and/or academic scholarship. We seek the best schools for each player, as well as the maximum sports and/or academic scholarship.
Here’s how the process of obtaining a bowling scholarship at an American school works. In the first part, the athlete needs to focus on achieving their best academic and athletic performance:
- Achieve the highest possible athletic level:
The higher the athletic level, the better the chances of getting a scholarship. Additionally, more options will be available to choose from. It’s important to work on gathering high-quality video footage over time in various matches to showcase the best performances.
- Achieve the highest possible academic level:
It’s crucial to focus on your studies to reach the highest academic level. This will provide more options and even allow you to earn academic scholarships to reduce the annual cost. Proper preparation for TOEFL and SAT exams is essential.
The Second Part of the Process is Managed by Awex Education
It’s very important to contact Awex Education well in advance and start preparing the process early. This will increase the chances of getting a sports scholarship in the U.S. and give you more options to choose from. We recommend starting the process 1 to 2 years before the planned start date in the U.S. or Canada.
Our process begins with a personalized free evaluation of the athlete and their chances of obtaining a sports scholarship in the U.S. or Canada, based on their bowling level, academics, and the expectations of the athlete and their family. Awex Education conducts this free evaluation with no obligation and communicates with the athlete and family to explain the real possibilities. Once the family decides to start the process, we take care of the following steps:
- We study each athlete’s individual case, athletic level, academic level, and preferences regarding schools. We search for the options that best fit their preferences and profile.
- We create a personal tracking sheet for each case, where we plan the next steps, exam dates, and objectives for the short, medium, and long term.
- We provide support for registering for the SAT and TOEFL exams.
- We offer guidance on creating a sports video, which is crucial as coaches use it to recruit players. We handle the final video editing.
- Once the final video is ready, we create an academic and athletic profile for the athlete to contact bowling coaches.
- We begin contacting schools that match the athlete’s profile and preferences. We work with the majority of schools in the U.S. and Canada that fit the athlete’s profile.
- We negotiate with each coach or school to obtain the maximum scholarship and best conditions possible.
- We present a report with several options, allowing enough time for the family to make a decision. The report includes information like the school’s name, location, academic level, athletic level, and scholarship amount.
- We help the athlete and their family choose the school, offering advice and guidance, but the final decision is theirs.
- We handle the admission process for the academic leagues in which the school competes (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).
- We take care of the student’s meal and housing plans.
- We manage the student’s medical insurance for the U.S. and Canada.
- We handle the student visa application for the U.S. and Canada.
- We organize the athlete’s flights and ensure they have someone to meet them upon arrival.
- We offer ongoing support throughout the athlete’s stay in the U.S. and Canada for any needs, school changes, questions, or necessary paperwork, all at NO extra cost.
- When students are in their third or fourth year of university, we offer a course at an English university that prepares them for the job market and helps them secure job offers.
One of the most important factors that sets our service apart is our close relationship with our athletes and families. We maintain continuous contact and can be reached via WhatsApp or phone, even outside office hours in case of emergencies.
Another crucial aspect of securing a good educational institution is the academic side, including high school grades, SAT scores, and TOEFL results. If two students have a very similar athletic level but significant differences in their academic level, the coach will usually offer the scholarship to the better student.
This is because students must meet minimum requirements, making academics as important as sports in several respects:
- Sports eligibility: Students must meet minimum exam score requirements to be accepted into sports leagues.
- School admission: Athletes must meet academic requirements on the SAT and TOEFL exams to be accepted by the schools.
- Additional academic scholarships: Good grades and high scores on the SAT and TOEFL can lead to academic scholarships, which can be combined with sports scholarships to increase the total amount.
The higher the academic scores, the more options the athlete will have and the more financial aid the school will offer.
Each school or coach has different minimum academic requirements. That’s why at Awex Education, we evaluate each athlete’s academic and athletic profile to find the school that best fits their needs.
In the U.S. and Canada, there are over a thousand educational institutions with bowling teams that participate in various leagues. These schools vary greatly in their bowling levels.
Bowling programs offer more scholarships to women than men, meaning women have a higher chance of securing scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on the athletic and academic level of each athlete.
Coaches typically communicate with athletes one or even two years before they start at the school. However, final decisions are based on performance a year before beginning in the U.S. or Canada, usually in the athlete’s last year of high school.
While most athletes specialize in one type of event, coaches look for versatile athletes who can compete in multiple events within their field.
In middle- and long-distance events, there may be even more opportunities because these athletes can compete in both cross-country and track, increasing a coach’s interest and leading to higher scholarships.
Bowling scholarships in the United States and Canada cover a percentage of the following expenses at the institution. In the case of obtaining a full bowling scholarship, all these expenses will be covered:
- Tuition and fees
- Books
- Accommodation (residence or apartment)
- Meals
- Health insurance
Additionally, all athletes on the institution’s bowling team, regardless of whether they have a bowling scholarship, always have the costs related to bowling covered: water polo training, sports equipment, official competitions, travel to competitions (transportation, accommodation, and meals), academic tutors if they need help with classes, sports medicine, physiotherapy, etc.
Coaches assess an athlete’s shooting level through various factors:
- Official Scores or Times: Coaches review official performance metrics.
- National and International Competitions: Participation and results in recognized competitions are considered.
- Shooting Video: A video showcasing the athlete’s skills and performance.
- Awex Education Evaluation:
With all this information, AWEX Education evaluates each athlete and their family and collaborates with educational institutions that align with their athletic and academic level, providing strong opportunities for obtaining a sports scholarship and joining the team.
