Fencing scholarships in the United States and Canada

The experience that will change your life

Thanks to a Fencing Scholarship in the United States or Canada, you’ll be able to live a truly unique experience. Traveling across the U.S. while representing your school nationwide is just one of the many advantages this opportunity offers. You’ll develop both academically and athletically, while learning a new language and building lifelong friendships with people from all over the world.

Athletes are treated like true professionals — with top-level facilities, professional training, travel opportunities, and high-quality sports equipment.

To obtain a Fencing Scholarship in the United States or Canada, the better your results in competitions, the greater the interest from college coaches, who will then offer higher scholarship amounts. It’s important to have official results to catch the attention of university coaches.

There are many universities in the United States with fencing programs, which belong to the athletic leagues: NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA, and NJCAA.

Coaches receive applications from many athletes every day, so it is important to stand out early and start the process to obtain a Fencing Scholarship in the United States or Canada in advance.

This way, you can stay in contact with the coaches over time and update them with your latest results.

It is very important for athletes to have the support of Awex Education well in advance, so that we can assess their real opportunities in the United States and avoid putting their athletic eligibility at risk.

At Awex Education, we take care of the entire process so that you don’t have to worry about anything and can fully enjoy this incredible experience.

Fencing in the Estados Unidos and Canadá

Our CEO, William Touchard, explains in detail everything you need to know about the sports program.

Do you have any questions?

The American educational system is the only system that allows student-athletes to combine competitive sports with university studies. Additionally, thanks to a fencing scholarship, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. Many times, it is also possible to combine academic scholarships, further reducing the total costs.

Schools offer fencing scholarships in the United States and Canada for their team members, allowing athletes to finance their studies through fencing.

Thanks to this opportunity, athletes can experience many advantages compared to the Spanish system: combining studies and sport, traveling completely free across the United States and Canada with the sports team, obtaining an academic degree from a U.S. or Canadian school, learning perfect English, meeting people from many different countries, and living unforgettable experiences… For all these reasons, fencing opens up a world of possibilities for athletes.

Each sports league has a maximum number of fencing scholarships to distribute, and within those limits, the school allocates the scholarship funds as it deems appropriate.

The coaches at these educational institutions distribute full and partial fencing scholarships to the team athletes. Normally, athletes must be among the best on the team to receive a fencing scholarship.

There are also other opportunities called walk-ons, which allow players to join the team without receiving a fencing scholarship in the United States and Canada. After a year in this position, depending on the player’s performance, they may earn a fencing scholarship for the following years.

The number of fencing scholarships available at each educational institution varies between schools. Each sports league has a maximum number of fencing scholarships it can offer, but schools may offer fewer scholarships than that limit if they choose.

A clear example is the universities that make up the IVY League (a league of academically prestigious universities such as Harvard), which do not offer athletic scholarships.

Additionally, fencing is a sport in which coaches can divide the number of fencing scholarships among team members. For example, in NCAA Division I, male fencing coaches can divide the value of 12.6 scholarships among as many players as they want.

Women’s fencing, on the other hand, in NCAA Division I is a sport that allows up to a maximum of 18 scholarships, so if the athlete has the appropriate level, it is possible to obtain a full fencing scholarship.

The objective of Awex Education is to ensure that athletes from all over the world can access an educational institution in the United States with a sports and/or academic scholarship. For this reason, we search for the best schools for each athlete, as well as the maximum sports and/or academic scholarship possible.

Here we explain the process of obtaining a fencing scholarship at an American educational institution. This first part is where the athlete must work to achieve the best athletic and academic results:

Achieve the highest possible fencing level: The higher the athlete’s level, the greater the chances of obtaining a fencing scholarship in the United States and Canada. Additionally, the athlete will have a wider range of options to choose from. It is important to plan fencing training and competition schedules to achieve the best possible results.

Achieve the highest possible academic level: It is very important to focus on studies to reach the maximum academic level. This way, more options will be available, and it may even be possible to obtain academic scholarships, reducing the annual cost. Adequate preparation for TOEFL and SAT exams is fundamental.

The second part of the process is handled by Awex Education. It is very important to contact Awex Education well in advance and start preparing the process early. This increases the chances of obtaining a sports scholarship in the United States and Canada and gives you more options to choose from. We recommend starting the process 1 to 2 years before the intended start date in the United States and Canada.

We analyze each case individually and the athlete’s possibilities of obtaining a fencing scholarship in the United States and Canada, based on fencing level, academic performance, and the expectations of the athlete and their family. At Awex Education, we provide this FREE evaluation with no obligation and meet with the athlete and family to explain the real possibilities. Once the family decides to start the process, we handle the following steps:

  • We study the individual case of each athlete: athletic level, academic level, and preferences regarding the educational institution. We look for the best options that match the athlete’s and family’s sports, academic, and financial profile.

  • We create a personal tracking sheet for each athlete, planning with the family the next steps, exam dates, exam preparations (depending on the league’s focus), as well as short-, medium-, and long-term objectives for the process.

  • We provide support for SAT and TOEFL exam registration.

  • We provide support in the creation of the sports video, giving advice and guidance to make a strong video, which is critical for recruitment. We handle the final editing of the athlete’s video.

  • With the final video, we create an academic and athletic profile of the athlete to present to fencing coaches.

  • We start contacting institutions that fit the athlete’s profile and family preferences. We work with the majority of educational institutions in the United States and Canada, in all states that correspond to the athlete’s profile.

  • We negotiate with each coach or school to obtain the maximum scholarship and best conditions possible for each athlete.

  • We present a report with multiple options, giving sufficient time to make a decision. The report includes information such as: school name, location, size, academic level, sports level, price without scholarship, scholarship amount, annual cost to pay.

  • We offer multiple options within the budget, always giving several alternatives for families to choose from.

  • We assist the athlete and their family in the selection of the school, providing advice and guidance, but the final decision is made by the family.

  • We handle the signature of the final offer from the selected educational institution.

  • We complete the admission procedure for the academic leagues in which the school competes (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).

  • We handle the admissions process with the chosen school (sending grades, SAT and TOEFL exams, admissions paperwork).

  • We finalize the meal and housing plans for the athlete.

  • We manage the medical insurance for the athlete in the United States and Canada.

  • We manage the student visa process for the United States and Canada for each athlete.

  • We organize flights and arrival so the athlete has someone to assist them upon arrival.

  • We assist at the school’s arrival with advice and help with questions (sending money, bank cards, first-day questions in the United States and Canada).

  • We assist in obtaining academic work opportunities within the school.

  • We provide support throughout the athlete’s stay in the United States and Canada for any needs, school changes, questions, or required paperwork, all at NO extra cost.

  • When athletes are in their 3rd or 4th year of university, we offer interested students a course at an English university to prepare them for the professional world and help them obtain job offers.

Additionally, an extremely important factor that sets our service apart is our close, personal approach. We maintain continuous contact with our athletes and their families. We communicate via WhatsApp or calls, and in emergencies, we are available outside office hours.

Another important aspect in order to secure a good educational institution is the academic side: high school grades, SAT scores, and TOEFL scores… If two students have a very similar level, but there are significant differences in academic performance, the coach will usually offer the fencing scholarship to the better student.

This is because students must meet certain minimum requirements, making the academic component just as important as fencing in several aspects:

  • Athletic acceptance: minimum grades on exams must be met to be accepted into the sports leagues.

  • To be accepted at the schools, the athlete must meet academic requirements in the SAT and TOEFL exams.

  • It is also possible to obtain an academic scholarship, which can be added to the sports scholarship, resulting in a higher total scholarship. To obtain academic scholarships, students must have good grades and strong results on the SAT and TOEFL exams.

Therefore, the higher the grades, the more options the athlete will have, and the greater the financial support from the institution.

Each school or coach has different minimum requirements regarding academic standards. That is why at Awex Education we study each academic and athletic profile to find the institution that best suits each athlete.

In the United States and Canada, there are more than one thousand educational institutions with fencing teams that are part of the different leagues. Within this wide range of schools, the level of fencing also varies greatly.

Fencing programs distribute a greater number of scholarships to women than to men, so the chances of obtaining a fencing scholarship are generally higher for women. Scholarships are offered based on the athletic and academic level of each athlete.

As a reference, here are the scores and results for men and women that coaches are interested in for each event.

Coaches are usually in contact with athletes one or even two years before starting at the school. However, final decisions are made based on results from one year before enrollment, when the athlete is in their final year of high school.

Although all athletes specialize in one type of event, coaches look for versatile athletes who can compete in multiple events within their category.

In the middle- and long-distance sector, the opportunities may be even greater, as these athletes can compete in both cross country and track, which may lead coaches to have more interest in these athletes and offer higher scholarships.

Fencing scholarships in the United States and Canada cover a percentage of the school expenses listed below. In the case of a full fencing scholarship, all of these expenses will be covered:

  • Tuition and fees

  • Books

  • Housing (Dormitory or apartment)

  • Meals

  • Health insurance

Additionally, all athletes on the school’s fencing team, whether they have a fencing scholarship or not, always have the following fencing-related expenses covered:

  • Fencing training

  • Sports equipment

  • Official competitions

  • Travel to competitions (transportation, lodging, and meals)

  • Academic tutoring, if help is needed with classes

  • Sports medicine and physiotherapy

Here’s the English translation with bold emphasis maintained:

Coaches measure the fencing level through several factors:

  • Official scores or times

  • National and international competitions

  • Fencing video

  • Awex Education evaluation

With all this information, at Awex Education we evaluate each athlete and their family and work with educational institutions that match their sports and academic level, offering good chances of obtaining a sports scholarship and playing on the team.
