Artistic Gymnastics in the
United States and Canada

Our CEO, William Touchard explains in detail what you need to know about the sports program.

Do you have any questions?

The American educational system is the only one that allows athletes to combine competitive sports with university studies. Furthermore, thanks to wrestling scholarships, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. Often, there are also opportunities to add academic scholarships that can further reduce total costs.

Schools offer wrestling scholarships in the United States and Canada for their team members, allowing athletes to finance their studies through Artistic Gymnastics.

Thanks to this opportunity, athletes can experience many advantages compared to the Spanish system: balancing studies and sports, traveling completely free across the United States and Canada with the sports team, obtaining an academic degree from a U.S. or Canadian institution, learning perfect English, meeting people from many different countries, and living unforgettable experiences. For all these reasons, wrestling opens a world of possibilities for athletes.

Each sports league has a maximum number of artistic gymnastics scholarships to distribute. Within these limits, the center allocates the money in scholarships as it deems appropriate.

Coaches from educational institutions distribute artistic gymnastics scholarships—both full and partial—to the team athletes. Normally, you must be among the best on the team to receive an artistic gymnastics scholarship. There are also other opportunities called “walk-on,” which allow players to join the team without receiving an artistic gymnastics scholarship in the United States or Canada. After a year in this position, depending on the player’s performance, they may earn an artistic gymnastics scholarship for the following years.

Limit of Scholarships per Team

The number of available artistic gymnastics scholarships varies by center. Each sports league has a maximum number of artistic gymnastics scholarships they can offer, but they may offer fewer than that limit if they choose to.

A clear example is the universities that make up the Ivy League (prestigious academic universities like Harvard), which do not offer athletic scholarships.

Additionally, artistic gymnastics is a sport in which coaches can divide the number of available scholarships among team members. For example, in NCAA D1, male artistic gymnastics coaches can divide the value of 12.6 scholarships among as many athletes as they wish.

Women’s artistic gymnastics in NCAA D1, on the other hand, is a sport with a maximum of 18 scholarships, so if an athlete has the appropriate level, it is possible to obtain a full artistic gymnastics scholarship.

A clear example is the universities that form the Ivy League (prestigious academic universities like Harvard), which do not offer athletic scholarships.

Moreover, soccer is a sport where coaches can divide the number of soccer scholarships among the team members. It is not necessary to give a full scholarship to each player, as they can offer a percentage or partial scholarships.

Here are tables with the scholarship limits for soccer that each university can have per soccer team, the average size of the team, and the number of universities:

Awex Education’s goal is to help athletes from around the world gain access to educational institutions in the United States and Canada with athletic and/or academic scholarships. Therefore, we seek the best institutions for each athlete, as well as the maximum athletic and/or academic scholarships.

Here’s how the process for obtaining a artistic gymnastics scholarship at an American educational institution works. This first part involves the athlete working to achieve the best athletic and academic results:

  1. Achieve the Highest Possible Level in artistic gymnastics: The higher the athlete’s level, the greater their chances of securing a artistic gymnastics scholarship in the United States and Canada. Additionally, they will have a wider range of options to choose from. It’s important to plan artistic gymnastics training and competition schedules to achieve the best possible results.
  2. Achieve the Highest Possible Academic Level: It’s crucial to focus on studies to reach the highest academic level possible. This way, more options will be available, and they may even receive academic scholarships to reduce annual costs. Proper preparation well in advance for the TOEFL and SAT exams is essential.

The second part of the process is handled by Awex Education. It’s very important to contact Awex Education well in advance and start preparing the process early. This will increase the chances of obtaining an athletic scholarship in the United States and Canada, giving more available options to choose from. We recommend starting the process 1 to 2 years before the intended start date in the United States or Canada.

We analyze each case individually based on their chances of obtaining a water polo scholarship in the United States or Canada, considering the level of artistic gymnastics, academics, and the expectations of the student and their family. Awex Education conducts this FREE evaluation without any obligation and meets with the athlete and their family to explain the real possibilities. Once the family decides to begin the process, we take care of the following steps:

  1. We study each athlete’s case individually, including their athletic level, academic level, and preferences regarding educational institutions. We look for options that best suit their preferences and their athletic, academic, and economic profiles. We discuss what the family is looking for to provide the best options that meet their requirements.
  2. We create a personalized tracking sheet for each athlete’s case, planning with the family the steps to follow, exam dates, exam preparations (depending on the league focus), and short, medium, and long-term objectives for the process.
  3. We offer support for registering for SAT and TOEFL exams.
  4. We assist in creating the sports video, providing advice and guidance to produce a good video. This video is crucial, as it will be the basis for recruiting players. We take care of the final editing of the athlete’s video.
  5. With the final video in hand, we create an academic and athletic profile of the athlete to contact artistic gymnastics coaches.
  6. We begin contacting institutions that align with the athlete’s profile and preferences. We work with most educational institutions in the United States and Canada across all states that correspond with the athlete’s profile.
  7. We negotiate with each coach or institution to obtain the maximum scholarship and best possible conditions for each athlete.
  8. We present a report with several options in a timely manner for the family to make a decision. The report includes information such as: institution name, location, size, academic level, athletic level, price without scholarship, scholarship amount, and annual payment amount.
  9. We offer various options within the budget. We always provide multiple alternatives so families can choose among them.
  10. We assist the athlete and their family in choosing the institution, providing advice and guidance, but the final decision rests with the family.
  11. We process the final offer signature from the educational institution the athlete wishes to commit to.
  12. We carry out the admission procedures for the academic leagues in which the school competes (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).
  13. We handle the admission process with the chosen institution (sending transcripts, sending SAT and TOEFL exams, admission paperwork, etc.).
  14. We prepare the athlete’s meal and accommodation plans.
  15. We take care of obtaining health insurance in the United States and Canada.
  16. We manage the student visa application process for the United States and Canada for each athlete.
  17. We organize flights and the athlete’s arrival to ensure they have someone to welcome them upon arrival.
  18. We provide assistance upon arrival at the institution with advice and help with any questions (sending money, bank cards, inquiries upon first arrival in the United States and Canada).
  19. We assist in obtaining academic jobs within the institution.
  20. We offer support throughout the athlete’s stay in the United States and Canada for anything they need, including school changes, questions, or necessary paperwork, all without ANY extra cost.
  21. When the students are in their third or fourth year of university, for interested individuals, we offer a course at an English university that prepares them for the job market and helps them secure job offers.

In addition to all this, a very important factor that sets our service apart is the close personal contact. We maintain continuous communication with our athletes and their families. We connect via WhatsApp or calls, and in case of emergencies, they can contact us at any hour outside office hours.

Another important part of securing a good educational institution is the academic aspect: high school grades, SAT scores, and TOEFL scores. If two students have very similar athletic levels but significant differences in their academic performance, coaches will typically offer the artistic gymnastics scholarship to the better student.

This is because students must meet minimum academic standards, making academics as important as artistic gymnastics in several aspects:

  1. Athletic Acceptance: Minimum exam scores must be met to be accepted into athletic leagues.
  2. To be accepted at institutions, the athlete must meet academic requirements for SAT and TOEFL exams.
  3. It is even possible to obtain an academic scholarship that can be added to the athletic scholarship amount, resulting in a larger total scholarship. To secure academic scholarships, students need to have good grades and solid results on the SAT and TOEFL exams.

Thus, the higher the grades, the broader the options available to the athlete, and the greater the financial support received from the institution.

Each institution or coach has different minimum requirements regarding the academic level they require. Therefore, Awex Education studies each academic and athletic profile to find the institution that best fits each athlete.

In the United States and Canada, there are more than a thousand educational centers with artistic gymnastics teams that are part of various leagues. Within this large range of centers, the level of artistic gymnastics is also very broad.

Artistic gymnastics programs distribute a larger number of scholarships to women than to men, so the chances of obtaining artistic gymnastics scholarships are greater for women than for men. Scholarships are offered based on the athlete’s sports and academic level.

Coaches will be in contact with athletes one or even two years before starting at the center. However, final decisions are made based on results from a year before starting in the United States and Canada, when the athlete is in their last year of high school.

Although all athletes specialize in a specific event, coaches look for versatile athletes who can compete in multiple events within their field.

Within the long-distance and middle-distance sector, the opportunities can be even greater, as these athletes can compete in cross-country and track, so coaches may have more interest in these athletes and offer them higher scholarships.

Artistic gymnastics scholarships in the United States and Canada cover a percentage of the center’s expenses listed below. If you receive a full artistic gymnastics scholarship, all these expenses will be covered:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Books
  • Housing (Residence or apartment)
  • Meals
  • Health insurance

Additionally, all athletes on the artistic gymnastics team at the center, whether or not they have an artistic gymnastics scholarship, always have their gymnastics expenses covered: artistic gymnastics training, sports equipment, official competitions, travel to competitions (transportation, accommodations, and meals), academic tutors if needed for help with classes, sports medicine, physiotherapy…

Coaches assess the level of artistic gymnastics through several factors:

  • Official marks or times
  • National and international competitions
  • Artistic gymnastics video
  • Awex Education evaluation

With all this information, at Awex Education, we evaluate each athlete and family and work with educational centers that match their sports and academic level, with good chances of obtaining a sports scholarship and playing on the team.

Definitely one of the best companies to work with if you want to study abroad. They are professional and friendly. Also they work with thousands of universities and schools, know how to do their job, and do it very well. They really simplify the process so much that you only have to do the parts they can't do for you (signing documents, filling out forms...). Without a doubt, a 10/10 experience."
