Why the United States and Canada?
The American education system is the only system that allows athletes to combine competitive sports with university studies. In addition, thanks to a hockey scholarship, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. Often, there are also opportunities to combine academic scholarships, further reducing the total costs.
Schools offer hockey scholarships in the United States and Canada for their team members, allowing athletes to finance their studies through hockey.
Thanks to this opportunity, athletes can have an experience that offers many advantages compared to the Spanish system: combining studies and sports, traveling across the United States and Canada for free with the sports team, earning an academic degree from a U.S. or Canadian institution, learning perfect English, meeting people from many different countries, and living unforgettable experiences… For all these reasons, hockey opens up a world of possibilities for athletes.
Hockey scholarships in the United States and Canada
Each sports league has a maximum number of hockey scholarships to distribute, but within those limits, each educational institution decides how to allocate the scholarship funds as it sees fit.
Coaches distribute these scholarships in the form of full and partial awards among the team’s athletes. Typically, a player must be among the best on the team to receive a hockey scholarship.
Additionally, there are opportunities known as walk-ons, which allow players to join the team without receiving a hockey scholarship. After a year in this position, depending on the player’s performance, they may earn a scholarship for the following years.
Limit on scholarships per team
The number of hockey scholarships available at each educational institution varies from school to school. Each sports league has a maximum number of hockey scholarships it can offer, but schools may choose to offer fewer than this limit.
A clear example is the universities in the Ivy League (prestigious academic universities such as Harvard), which do not offer athletic scholarships.
Additionally, hockey is a sport in which coaches can divide the total number of scholarships among team members. For example, in NCAA Division I, men’s hockey coaches can split the value of 12.6 scholarships among as many players as they wish.
Women’s hockey in NCAA Division I, on the other hand, has a maximum of 18 scholarships, so if the athlete has the appropriate level, it is possible to obtain a full hockey scholarship.

The goal of Awex Education is to help athletes from all over the world gain access to an educational institution in the United States or Canada with a sports and/or academic scholarship. For this reason, we look for the best institutions for each athlete, as well as the maximum possible sports and/or academic scholarship.
Here we explain the process of obtaining a hockey scholarship at an American educational institution. The first part of this process is where the athlete must focus on achieving the best possible athletic and academic results:
Achieve the highest possible hockey level: The higher the athlete’s level, the greater the chances of obtaining a hockey scholarship in the United States or Canada. In addition, this will provide a wider range of options to choose from. It is important to plan hockey training sessions and competition schedules to reach the best possible performance.
Achieve the highest possible academic level: Focusing on studies is essential to reach the highest academic level. This increases the number of available options and may even allow the athlete to obtain academic scholarships, reducing the overall annual cost. Early preparation for the TOEFL and SAT exams is crucial.
The second part of the process is handled by Awex Education. It is very important to contact Awex Education well in advance and start preparing the process early. This way, we increase the chances of obtaining a sports scholarship in the United States or Canada and have more options to choose from. We recommend starting the process 1 to 2 years before the intended start date in the U.S. or Canada.
We analyze each case individually and assess the athlete’s chances of obtaining a hockey scholarship in the United States based on their athletic and academic level, as well as the expectations of the student and their family. Awex Education provides this evaluation FREE OF CHARGE and without any obligation, and we meet with the athlete and family to explain the real possibilities. Once the family decides to begin the process, we handle the following steps:
We study each athlete individually, considering their sports level, academic level, and preferences regarding educational institutions. We look for options that best match the athlete’s and family’s profile, both academically, athletically, and economically.
We create a personal tracking sheet for each athlete. This sheet plans the steps to follow with the family, exam dates, exam preparations (depending on the league focus), and short-, medium-, and long-term goals for the process.
We provide support for SAT and TOEFL exam registrations.
We assist in the creation of the sports video, offering advice and guidance to produce a high-quality video, which is very important for recruiting athletes. We handle the final editing of the athlete’s video.
With the final video, we create an academic and athletic profile of the athlete to contact hockey coaches.
We begin contacting institutions that match the athlete’s and family’s preferences. We work with most educational institutions in the United States and Canada, across all states that align with the athlete’s profile.
We negotiate with each coach or institution to obtain the maximum scholarship and best possible conditions for each athlete.
We present a report with multiple options with enough time to make a decision. The report includes information such as the institution’s name, location, size, academic level, athletic level, price without scholarship, scholarship amount, and annual cost after scholarship.
We offer multiple options within the budget, ensuring families can choose from different alternatives.
We assist the athlete and family in choosing the institution, providing advice and guidance, but the final decision rests with the family.
We handle the signing of the final offer from the chosen educational institution.
We carry out the eligibility procedure for the academic leagues in which the school competes (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).
We handle the admission process with the chosen institution (submission of grades, SAT and TOEFL exams, admissions paperwork, etc.).
We prepare the athlete’s meal and housing plans.
We arrange health insurance in the United States and Canada.
We handle the student visa process for the United States and Canada for each athlete.
We organize flights and arrival so the athlete has support upon reaching the destination.
We assist upon arrival at the institution, providing advice and support (sending money, bank cards, first-day questions in the U.S. or Canada).
We assist in obtaining academic work within the institution.
We provide support throughout the athlete’s stay in the United States and Canada for any needs, school changes, questions, or paperwork. All of this is provided at NO EXTRA COST.
For athletes in their 3rd or 4th year of university, we offer an optional course at an English university that prepares them for the professional world and helps secure job offers.
A key factor that sets our service apart is the personalized and close support. We maintain continuous contact with our athletes and their families via WhatsApp or calls. In case of urgency, we are available outside regular office hours.
Academic requirements
Another important aspect of securing a good educational institution is academics: high school grades, SAT and TOEFL scores… If two students have very similar athletic levels but significant differences in academic performance, the coach will usually award the hockey scholarship to the stronger student academically.
This is because students must meet certain minimum requirements, making academics as important as hockey in several ways:
Athletic eligibility: Students must meet minimum grade requirements on exams to be accepted into athletic leagues.
Institutional acceptance: Athletes must meet the academic requirements on the SAT and TOEFL exams to be accepted into the schools.
Academic scholarships: It is also possible to obtain an academic scholarship, which can be added to the athletic scholarship, resulting in a higher total scholarship. To receive academic scholarships, good grades and strong SAT and TOEFL scores are required.
The higher the academic scores, the wider the range of options available to the athlete, and the greater the financial support offered by the school.
Each school or coach has different minimum academic requirements. That’s why, at Awex Education, we carefully analyze each athlete’s academic and athletic profile to find the school that best fits their needs.
What level of hockey is required?
In the United States and Canada, there are over a thousand educational institutions with hockey teams that belong to various leagues. Within this wide range of schools, the level of hockey varies greatly as well.
Hockey programs award a higher number of scholarships to women than to men, so the chances of receiving a hockey scholarship are generally greater for female athletes. Scholarships are offered based on each athlete’s athletic and academic level.
Coaches usually stay in contact with athletes one or even two years before they begin at the school; however, final decisions are made based on the athlete’s performance about one year prior to starting in the U.S. or Canada, typically during their final year of high school.
Although all athletes specialize in a particular event or position, coaches look for versatile players who can compete in multiple events within their sport.
In middle- and long-distance sectors, opportunities may be even greater because these athletes can compete in both cross-country and track events. As a result, coaches may show more interest in these athletes and offer them higher scholarships.
