Why the United States and Canada?
The American educational system is the only system that allows athletes to combine competitive sports with university studies. Moreover, thanks to a lacrosse scholarship, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. In many cases, it is also possible to add academic scholarships, further reducing the total costs.
Schools offer lacrosse scholarships in the United States and Canada for their team members, enabling athletes to finance their studies through lacrosse.
This opportunity allows athletes to have an experience with many advantages compared to the Spanish system: combining academics and sports, traveling completely free across the United States and Canada with the team, obtaining an academic degree from a U.S. or Canadian institution, learning perfect English, meeting people from many different countries, and living unforgettable experiences. For all these reasons, lacrosse opens up a world of possibilities for athletes.
Lacrosse scholarships in the United States and Canada
Each sports league has a maximum number of lacrosse scholarships to award, but within those limits, each school decides how to distribute the scholarship funds as they see fit.
Coaches at educational institutions distribute these funds in the form of full and partial lacrosse scholarships to team athletes. Normally, athletes need to be among the best on the team to receive a lacrosse scholarship.
There are also opportunities known as walk-on positions, which allow players to join the team without receiving a lacrosse scholarship. After a year in this position, depending on the athlete’s performance, they may earn a lacrosse scholarship for the following years.
Scholarship limit per team
The number of lacrosse scholarships available at each educational institution varies from school to school. Each sports league has a maximum number of lacrosse scholarships they can offer, but schools may choose to award fewer scholarships than this limit at their discretion.
A clear example is the universities that make up the IVY League (prestigious academic institutions such as Harvard), which do not offer athletic scholarships.
Additionally, lacrosse is a sport in which coaches can divide the total number of scholarships among team members. For example, in NCAA Division I, men’s lacrosse coaches can divide the value of 12.6 scholarships among as many players as they wish.
Women’s lacrosse, on the other hand, in NCAA Division I, has a maximum of 18 scholarships, so if a player has the appropriate level, it is possible to receive a full lacrosse scholarship.
How does the process of obtaining lacrosse scholarships in the United States and Canada work?
The goal of Awex Education is to help lacrosse players access educational institutions in the United States and Canada with a lacrosse and/or academic scholarship. For this reason, we look for the best schools for each athlete, as well as the maximum possible athletic and/or academic scholarship.
Here is an overview of the process to obtain a lacrosse scholarship at an American school. In the first part, the athlete must focus on achieving their highest athletic and academic performance:
Achieve the highest possible athletic level: The higher the athlete’s level, the greater the chances of obtaining a lacrosse scholarship. In addition, a wider range of options will be available to choose from. It is important to work on obtaining high-quality video footage from multiple games to ensure the best possible highlights.
Achieve the highest possible academic level: Focusing on academics is crucial to reach the highest academic level. This increases available options and may allow the athlete to obtain academic scholarships in addition to athletic ones, reducing overall costs. Early preparation for the TOEFL and SAT exams is essential.
The second part of the process is handled by Awex Education. It is very important to contact Awex Education well in advance and begin preparing early. This significantly increases the chances of obtaining an athletic scholarship in the United States and provides more options to choose from. We recommend starting 1 to 2 years before the intended start date in the United States or Canada.
Our process begins with a personalized, free analysis of the athlete and their chances of obtaining an athletic scholarship in the U.S., based on lacrosse skill level, academics, and the expectations of the athlete and their family. This evaluation is completely free and without any obligation. We meet with the athlete and family to explain realistic possibilities. Once the family decides to start the process, we handle the following steps:
We study each athlete individually, including athletic and academic levels, and preferences regarding educational institutions. We search for the best options that fit their athletic, academic, and financial profile. We discuss the family’s goals to offer the most suitable options.
We create a personalized follow-up plan for each athlete, which includes timelines, exam preparation (depending on the league), and short-, medium-, and long-term goals.
We provide support for SAT and TOEFL registration.
We provide guidance for creating a sports highlight video, including advice to produce a strong video, which is essential for recruitment. We handle the final video editing for the athlete.
With the completed video, we create an academic and athletic profile to contact lacrosse coaches.
We begin contacting schools that match the athlete’s and family’s profile and preferences. We work with the majority of schools across the United States and Canada.
We negotiate with each coach or school to secure the maximum scholarship and best conditions.
We present a report with multiple options, giving the family enough time to make a decision. The report includes school name, location, size, academic level, lacrosse level, cost without scholarship, scholarship amount, and annual cost after scholarship.
We offer several options within budget, ensuring families have alternatives to choose from.
We assist the athlete and family in choosing a school, offering guidance and advice while leaving the final decision to the family.
We handle the signing of the final offer with the chosen school.
We complete the eligibility process for the leagues in which the school competes (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).
We manage the admissions process with the chosen school (sending grades, SAT and TOEFL scores, admissions paperwork).
We prepare the athlete’s meal and housing plans.
We handle health insurance in the United States and Canada.
We manage the student visa process for each athlete.
We organize flights and arrival, ensuring the athlete has support upon reaching the school.
We assist during arrival with guidance, including money transfers, banking, and initial questions.
We help athletes access academic jobs on campus.
We provide continuous support throughout the athlete’s stay, including school changes, questions, or paperwork, all at no extra cost.
For students in their 3rd or 4th year of university, we offer a course at a UK university to prepare them for the workforce and help secure job opportunities.
A key differentiating factor of our service is our personalized approach. We maintain continuous contact with athletes and families via WhatsApp or calls, and in urgent cases, we are available outside of office hours.
Academic requirements
Another important factor in obtaining a good educational institution is the academic performance—high school grades, SAT scores, and TOEFL results. If two students have a very similar athletic level but differ significantly in academic performance, the coach will usually offer the lacrosse scholarship to the better student academically.
This is because students must meet certain minimum academic requirements, making academics just as important as lacrosse in several aspects:
Athletic eligibility: Minimum grades must be met to be accepted into sports leagues.
School acceptance: The athlete must meet the school’s academic requirements on the SAT and TOEFL exams.
Academic scholarships: A student can also obtain an academic scholarship, which can be combined with the athletic scholarship to increase the total financial aid. To qualify for academic scholarships, students must have strong grades and SAT/TOEFL scores.
In short, the higher the academic results, the more options the athlete will have and the greater the financial support offered by the school.
Each school or coach has different minimum academic requirements. That’s why at Awex Education, we carefully evaluate each athlete’s academic and athletic profile to find the school that best fits their abilities and goals.
