There are many universities in the United States with shooting programs.
These universities belong to the collegiate leagues: NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA, and NJCAA.
Coaches receive applications from many athletes every day, so it is important to stand out and start the process for obtaining a shooting scholarship in the U.S. early. This way, you can stay in contact with the coaches and keep them updated on your latest scores.

Why the United States and Canada?
The American educational system is the only system that allows combining competitive sports with university studies. Additionally, thanks to a shooting scholarship, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. In many cases, it is also possible to add academic scholarships, further reducing the total costs.
Schools in the United States offer shooting scholarships to their team members, allowing athletes to finance their studies through the sport of shooting.
Thanks to this opportunity, athletes can have an experience that offers many advantages compared to the Spanish system: combining studies and sport, traveling for free across the U.S. with the sports team, earning an academic degree from a U.S. school, learning perfect English, meeting people from many different countries, and living unforgettable experiences… For all these reasons, shooting opens up a world of possibilities for athletes.
Shooting scholarships in the United States and Canada
Each sports league has a maximum number of shooting scholarships to distribute, and within those limits, each school decides how to allocate the scholarship funds as it sees fit.
Coaches at educational institutions award full and partial shooting scholarships to team athletes. Typically, to receive a shooting scholarship, an athlete must be among the best on the team. There are also opportunities known as walk-on, which allow athletes to join the team without receiving a shooting scholarship initially. After a year in this position, depending on the athlete’s performance, it may be possible to earn a shooting scholarship for the following years.
Scholarship limit per team
The number of shooting scholarships available at each educational institution varies from school to school. Each sports league sets a maximum number of scholarships that can be offered, but schools may choose to offer fewer scholarships than this maximum.
A clear example is the universities that make up the IVY League (prestigious academic universities such as Harvard), which do not offer athletic scholarships.
Additionally, shooting is a sport in which coaches can split the total number of scholarships among team members. For example, in NCAA D1 men’s shooting, coaches can divide the value of 12.6 scholarships among as many players as they want.
On the other hand, women’s shooting in NCAA D1 has a maximum of 18 scholarships, so if a player has the appropriate level, it is possible to obtain a full shooting scholarship.
How does the process of obtaining shooting scholarships in the United States and Canada work?
The goal of AWEX Education is to help athletes from all over the world gain access to an educational institution in the United States with an athletic and/or academic scholarship. For this reason, we look for the best schools for each athlete, as well as the maximum athletic and/or academic scholarship.
Here’s how the process of obtaining a shooting scholarship at an American educational institution works. The first part is where the athlete must work to achieve their best athletic and academic results:
Achieve the highest possible shooting level: The higher the athlete’s level, the greater their chances of obtaining a shooting scholarship in the U.S. In addition, they will have a wider range of options to choose from. It is important to plan shooting training and competition schedules to achieve the best possible results.
Achieve the highest possible academic level: Focusing on studies is essential to reach the maximum academic level. This will give the athlete more options and even allow them to obtain academic scholarships to reduce the annual cost. Proper preparation for the TOEFL and SAT exams in advance is fundamental.
The second part of the process is handled by AWEX Education. It is very important to contact us well in advance and start preparing the process early. This way, we increase the chances of obtaining a better athletic scholarship in the U.S. and have more options to choose from. We recommend starting the process 1 to 2 years before the intended start date in the U.S.
We analyze each case individually and assess the athlete’s possibilities of obtaining a shooting scholarship in the U.S. according to their shooting level, academic record, and the expectations of the athlete and their family. At AWEX Education, we provide this evaluation FREE of charge and without any commitment, and we meet with the athlete and their family to explain the real possibilities. Once the family decides to start the process, we handle the following steps:
We study the individual case of each athlete: athletic level, academic level, and preferences regarding educational institutions. We look for the options that best match their profile and family requirements.
We create a personal tracking sheet for each athlete. This sheet plans the steps to follow, exam dates, preparation for exams (depending on the league’s requirements), and short-, medium-, and long-term goals of the process.
We provide support for registering for SAT and TOEFL exams.
We provide support in creating a sports video, giving guidance to ensure a high-quality final product, which is crucial for recruitment. We handle the final editing of the athlete’s video.
With the final video, we create an academic and athletic profile to contact shooting coaches.
We begin contacting institutions that fit the athlete’s profile and family preferences. We work with most schools in the U.S., across all states that match the athlete’s profile.
We negotiate with each coach or institution to obtain the maximum scholarship and best possible conditions for each athlete.
We present a report with several options, giving the family sufficient time to make a decision. The report includes information such as the school’s name, location, size, academic level, athletic level, cost without scholarship, scholarship amount, and annual cost.
We offer multiple options within the family’s budget, always providing alternatives to choose from.
We assist the athlete and their family in choosing the right school, advising and guiding them, while the final decision remains with the family.
We handle the signing of the final offer from the selected school.
We complete the admission process for the academic leagues in which the school competes (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).
We handle the admission process with the selected school (sending grades, SAT and TOEFL scores, admission paperwork, etc.).
We prepare the athlete’s meal and housing plans.
We handle medical insurance in the U.S.
We handle the student visa application for each athlete.
We organize flights and arrival so the athlete has support upon reaching the U.S.
We provide guidance and support upon arrival (money transfer, bank cards, first-day questions).
We assist in obtaining on-campus jobs.
We provide support for athletes interested in summer jobs at U.S. tennis or shooting camps.
We provide continuous support throughout the athlete’s stay in the U.S., for school changes, questions, doubts, or required paperwork. All of this comes at no additional cost.
For athletes in their 3rd or 4th year of college, we offer a course at an English university to prepare them for the workforce and help them secure job offers.
Finally, a key factor that sets our service apart is our personalized support. We maintain continuous contact with our athletes and families via WhatsApp or calls, and in case of urgency, we are available outside of office hours.
Academic requirements
Another important factor in securing a good educational institution is academics—high school grades, SAT and TOEFL scores… If two students have very similar athletic levels but significant differences in academic performance, the coach will usually offer the shooting scholarship to the better student.
This is because students must meet minimum requirements, so academics are as important as shooting in several aspects:
Athletic acceptance: Minimum grades must be met in exams to be accepted into the athletic leagues.
To be accepted at schools, the athlete must meet the academic requirements in SAT and TOEFL exams.
It is even possible to obtain an academic scholarship that can be added to the athletic scholarship, increasing the total amount. To receive academic scholarships, students must have strong grades and good results on SAT and TOEFL exams.
Therefore, the higher the grades, the wider the range of options the athlete will have, and the higher the funding offered by the school.
Each school or coach sets different minimum academic requirements. That is why, at AWEX Education, we study each athlete’s academic and athletic profile to find the school that best fits their needs.
What shooting level is needed to obtain a shooting scholarship in the U.S.?
In the United States, there are over 1,000 educational institutions with shooting teams that belong to various athletic leagues. Within this large group of schools, the shooting level varies widely.
Shooting programs generally allocate more scholarships to women than men, so the chances of obtaining a shooting scholarship are higher for female athletes. Scholarships are offered based on both the athletic and academic level of each athlete.
Coaches will be in contact with athletes one or even two years before starting at the school; however, final decisions are usually based on results from one year before starting in the U.S., when the athlete is in their last year of high school.
Although all athletes specialize in a specific event, coaches look for versatile athletes who can compete in multiple events within their discipline.
In middle- and long-distance events, the chances can be even higher since these athletes can compete in both cross country and track, which may increase the coach’s interest and lead to higher scholarship offers.
