High School track and field
If you are between 12 and 17 years old, have an intermediate level of English, and a grade above 6 out of 10, you can apply for a scholarship to study at a High School in the United States or Canada.
University track and field
If you are 16 years or older, have an intermediate level of English, and a grade above 6 out of 10, you can apply for a scholarship to study at a University in the United States or Canada.

Why the United States and Canada?
The American education system is the only system that allows athletes to combine competitive sports with university studies. Additionally, thanks to a track & field scholarship, athletes can cover a portion of their academic expenses. Often, there are also opportunities to combine it with academic scholarships, further reducing the total costs.

How does the process of obtaining track and field scholarships in the United States and Canada work?
The goal of AWEX Education is to enable athletes from all over the world to access an educational institution in the United States with a sports and/or academic scholarship. For this reason, we look for the best schools for each athlete, as well as the maximum sports and/or academic scholarship.
Here we explain the process of obtaining a track & field scholarship at an American educational institution. The first part is where the athlete must work to achieve the best sports and academic results:
Achieve the highest possible track & field level: The higher the athlete’s level, the greater the chances of obtaining a track & field scholarship in the U.S. In addition, the athlete will have a wider range of options to choose from. It is important to plan track & field training sessions and competition schedules to reach the best possible marks.
Achieve the highest possible academic level: Focusing on studies is essential to reach the highest academic level. This way, more options will be available, and it may even be possible to obtain academic scholarships to reduce the annual cost. Preparing in advance for the TOEFL and SAT exams is crucial.
The second part of the process is handled by AWEX Education. It is very important to contact us well in advance and start preparing the process early. This increases the chances of obtaining a sports scholarship in the U.S. and gives more options to choose from. We recommend starting 1–2 years before the intended start date in the U.S.
We analyze each case individually and evaluate the athlete’s chances of obtaining a track & field scholarship in the U.S. based on their athletic level, academic level, and the student and family’s expectations. At AWEX Education, we provide this evaluation FREE of charge and meet with the athlete and family to explain the real possibilities. Once the family decides to start the process, we take care of the following steps:
We study each athlete’s case individually, including athletic level, academic level, and preferences regarding schools. We look for options that best suit the athlete’s and family’s sporting, academic, and financial profile. We discuss with the family to offer the best options that meet their requirements.
We create a personal tracking sheet for each athlete, planning steps with the family, exam dates, exam preparation (depending on the league focus), and short-, medium-, and long-term goals.
We provide support for SAT and TOEFL registration.
We provide support in the creation of the sports video, with advice and guidance to make a strong video. The video is very important as it is used to recruit athletes. We handle the final editing of the athlete’s video.
With the final video, we create an academic and athletic profile of the athlete to contact track & field coaches.
We start contacting schools that match the athlete’s profile and family preferences. We work with most educational institutions in the U.S., across all states relevant to the athlete’s profile.
We negotiate with each coach or school to obtain the maximum scholarship and the best conditions possible for each athlete.
We present a report with several options with enough time to make a decision. The report includes information such as: school name, location, size, academic level, athletic level, cost without scholarship, scholarship amount, annual cost after scholarship…
We offer several options within the budget, always giving families multiple alternatives to choose from.
We help the athlete and family choose the school, advising and guiding them, but the final decision is made by the family.
We process the signature of the final offer from the chosen school.
We handle the admission procedures for the academic leagues in which the school competes (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).
We manage the admission process with the chosen school (sending transcripts, SAT and TOEFL scores, admissions paperwork…).
We prepare the athlete’s meal plans and accommodation.
We take care of health insurance in the U.S.
We handle the student visa process for the U.S. for each athlete.
We organize flights and arrival so the athlete has support upon arrival.
We assist upon arrival with advice and guidance (sending money, bank cards, questions during first days in the U.S.).
We help athletes obtain academic jobs within the school.
We provide support throughout the athlete’s stay in the U.S. for anything they need, including school changes, questions, or paperwork. All at no extra cost.
When athletes are in their 3rd or 4th year of college, we offer an optional course at an English university to prepare them for the workforce and help them secure job offers.
Additionally, a key factor that sets our service apart is the personalized attention. We maintain continuous contact with our athletes and their families. We communicate via WhatsApp or calls, and in case of emergency, we can be reached anytime outside office hours.
Academic requirements
Another important factor to secure a good educational institution is the academic performance—high school grades, SAT scores, and TOEFL results. If two athletes have a very similar athletic level but significant differences in academic performance, the coach will usually award the track & field scholarship to the better student.
This is because students must meet minimum academic requirements, making academics as important as track & field in several aspects:
Athletic acceptance: Minimum grades on exams are required to be accepted into sports leagues.
School admission: To be accepted at the institution, the athlete must meet the academic requirements on the SAT and TOEFL exams.
Academic scholarships: It is even possible to obtain an academic scholarship, which can be added to the sports scholarship, resulting in a larger total scholarship. To qualify for academic scholarships, athletes must have strong grades and good SAT and TOEFL results.
Therefore, the higher the grades, the wider the range of options available to the athlete and the greater the financial support offered by the school.
Each school or coach has different academic minimums, which is why AWEX Education carefully evaluates each athlete’s academic and athletic profile to find the school that best fits their needs.
What level of track and field is required?
In the United States, there are over a thousand educational institutions with track & field teams that belong to various leagues. Within this wide range of schools, the level of track & field is also very diverse.
Track & field programs tend to award a larger number of scholarships to women than to men, so the chances of receiving a track & field scholarship are higher for female athletes. Scholarships are offered based on each athlete’s athletic and academic level.
Coaches are usually in contact with athletes one or even two years before they start at the school. However, final decisions are made based on performances from one year prior to starting in the U.S., when the athlete is in their senior year of high school.
Although all athletes specialize in a particular event, coaches look for versatile athletes who can compete in multiple events within their discipline.
In the middle- and long-distance events, the chances can be even greater, as these athletes can compete in both cross country and track. For this reason, coaches may have more interest in these athletes and offer higher scholarships.
What do track and field scholarships cover?
