Do you have any questions?
The American educational system is the only one that allows athletes to combine competitive sports with university studies. Furthermore, thanks to wrestling scholarships, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. Often, there are also opportunities to add academic scholarships that can further reduce total costs.
Schools offer wrestling scholarships in the United States and Canada for their team members, allowing athletes to finance their studies through wrestling.
Thanks to this opportunity, athletes can experience many advantages compared to the Spanish system: balancing studies and sports, traveling completely free across the United States and Canada with the sports team, obtaining an academic degree from a U.S. or Canadian institution, learning perfect English, meeting people from many different countries, and living unforgettable experiences. For all these reasons, wrestling opens a world of possibilities for athletes.
Each sports league has a maximum number of wrestling scholarships to distribute; within those limits, the school allocates the scholarship funds as deemed appropriate.
Coaches at educational institutions distribute full and partial wrestling scholarships to team athletes. Generally, one must be among the top athletes on the team to receive a wrestling scholarship. There are also opportunities called “walk-ons,” which allow players to join the team without receiving a wrestling scholarship in the United States or Canada. After one year in this position, depending on the player’s performance, they may earn a wrestling scholarship for subsequent years.
The number of available wrestling scholarships at each educational institution varies. Each sports league has a maximum number of scholarships that can be offered, but they may choose to offer fewer scholarships than that limit.
A clear example is the universities that form the Ivy League (a league of prestigious academic universities like Harvard) that do not offer athletic scholarships.
Additionally, wrestling is a sport in which coaches can divide the number of wrestling scholarships among team members. For example, in NCAA D1, men’s wrestling coaches can divide the value of 12.6 scholarships among as many athletes as they wish.
On the other hand, women’s wrestling in NCAA D1 has a maximum of 18 scholarships available, so if the level is adequate, it is possible to obtain a full wrestling scholarship.
Awex Education’s goal is to help athletes from around the world gain access to educational institutions in the United States and Canada with athletic and/or academic scholarships. Therefore, we seek the best institutions for each athlete, as well as the maximum athletic and/or academic scholarships.
Here’s how the process for obtaining a wrestling scholarship at an American educational institution works. This first part involves the athlete working to achieve the best athletic and academic results:
- Achieve the Highest Possible Level in Wrestling: The higher the athlete’s level, the greater their chances of securing a wrestling scholarship in the United States and Canada. Additionally, they will have a wider range of options to choose from. It’s important to plan wrestling training and competition schedules to achieve the best possible results.
- Achieve the Highest Possible Academic Level: It’s crucial to focus on studies to reach the highest academic level possible. This way, more options will be available, and they may even receive academic scholarships to reduce annual costs. Proper preparation well in advance for the TOEFL and SAT exams is essential.
The second part of the process is handled by Awex Education. It’s very important to contact Awex Education well in advance and start preparing the process early. This will increase the chances of obtaining an athletic scholarship in the United States and Canada, giving more available options to choose from. We recommend starting the process 1 to 2 years before the intended start date in the United States or Canada.
We analyze each case individually based on their chances of obtaining a wrestling scholarship in the United States or Canada, considering the level of water polo, academics, and the expectations of the student and their family. Awex Education conducts this FREE evaluation without any obligation and meets with the athlete and their family to explain the real possibilities. Once the family decides to begin the process, we take care of the following steps:
- We study each athlete’s case individually, including their athletic level, academic level, and preferences regarding educational institutions. We look for options that best suit their preferences and their athletic, academic, and economic profiles. We discuss what the family is looking for to provide the best options that meet their requirements.
- We create a personalized tracking sheet for each athlete’s case, planning with the family the steps to follow, exam dates, exam preparations (depending on the league focus), and short, medium, and long-term objectives for the process.
- We offer support for registering for SAT and TOEFL exams.
- We assist in creating the sports video, providing advice and guidance to produce a good video. This video is crucial, as it will be the basis for recruiting players. We take care of the final editing of the athlete’s video.
- With the final video in hand, we create an academic and athletic profile of the athlete to contact wrestling coaches.
- We begin contacting institutions that align with the athlete’s profile and preferences. We work with most educational institutions in the United States and Canada across all states that correspond with the athlete’s profile.
- We negotiate with each coach or institution to obtain the maximum scholarship and best possible conditions for each athlete.
- We present a report with several options in a timely manner for the family to make a decision. The report includes information such as: institution name, location, size, academic level, athletic level, price without scholarship, scholarship amount, and annual payment amount.
- We offer various options within the budget. We always provide multiple alternatives so families can choose among them.
- We assist the athlete and their family in choosing the institution, providing advice and guidance, but the final decision rests with the family.
- We process the final offer signature from the educational institution the athlete wishes to commit to.
- We carry out the admission procedures for the academic leagues in which the school competes (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).
- We handle the admission process with the chosen institution (sending transcripts, sending SAT and TOEFL exams, admission paperwork, etc.).
- We prepare the athlete’s meal and accommodation plans.
- We take care of obtaining health insurance in the United States and Canada.
- We manage the student visa application process for the United States and Canada for each athlete.
- We organize flights and the athlete’s arrival to ensure they have someone to welcome them upon arrival.
- We provide assistance upon arrival at the institution with advice and help with any questions (sending money, bank cards, inquiries upon first arrival in the United States and Canada).
- We assist in obtaining academic jobs within the institution.
- We offer support throughout the athlete’s stay in the United States and Canada for anything they need, including school changes, questions, or necessary paperwork, all without ANY extra cost.
- When the students are in their third or fourth year of university, for interested individuals, we offer a course at an English university that prepares them for the job market and helps them secure job offers.
In addition to all this, a very important factor that sets our service apart is the close personal contact. We maintain continuous communication with our athletes and their families. We connect via WhatsApp or calls, and in case of emergencies, they can contact us at any hour outside office hours.
Another crucial aspect for obtaining a good educational institution is the academic part, including high school grades, SAT scores, and TOEFL scores. If two students have very similar athletic levels but significant differences in academic performance, the coach will usually offer the wrestling scholarship to the better student.
This is because students must meet minimum academic standards, making academics as important as wrestling in several aspects:
- Athletic Eligibility: Minimum grades must be met on exams to be accepted into athletic leagues.
- To be accepted into the schools, the athlete must meet the academic requirements on the SAT and TOEFL exams.
- It is even possible to obtain an academic scholarship that can be combined with the sports scholarship, resulting in a higher total scholarship. To qualify for academic scholarships, students need good grades and solid results on the SAT and TOEFL exams.
Therefore, the higher the grades, the more options the athlete will have, and the more funding the institution will provide.
Each institution or coach has different minimum academic requirements. That’s why at Awex Education, we study each athlete’s academic and sports profile to find the school that best fits each athlete.
In the United States and Canada, there are over a thousand educational institutions with wrestling teams that belong to various leagues. Within this broad array of schools, their level of wrestling also varies widely.
Wrestling programs offer a greater number of scholarships to women than to men, so the chances of obtaining wrestling scholarships will be higher for women than for men. Scholarships are offered based on each athlete’s sports and academic level.
Coaches will be in contact with athletes a year or even two before starting at the institution; however, final decisions are based on performance from the year before starting in the United States and Canada, during the athlete’s last year of high school.
Although all athletes specialize in a specific type of event, coaches seek versatile athletes who can compete in multiple events within their sector.
In the long-distance and middle-distance sector, opportunities can be even greater as these athletes can compete in Wrestling, so coaches may have more interest in these athletes and offer them higher scholarships.
Wrestling scholarships in the United States and Canada cover a percentage of the following expenses; in the case of obtaining a full wrestling scholarship, all these costs will be covered:
- Tuition and fees
- Books
- Housing (Residence or apartment)
- Meals
- Health insurance
Additionally, all athletes on the wrestling team, regardless of whether they have a wrestling scholarship
Coaches assess an athlete’s shooting level through various factors:
- Official Scores or Times: Coaches review official performance metrics.
- National and International Competitions: Participation and results in recognized competitions are considered.
- Shooting Video: A video showcasing the athlete’s skills and performance.
