Do you have any questions?
Why the United States and Canada?
The American educational system is the only one in the world that allows students to combine competitive sports with university studies. In addition, thanks to a wrestling scholarship, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. In many cases, it is also possible to combine athletic and academic scholarships to further reduce total costs.
Schools in the United States and Canada offer wrestling scholarships to members of their teams, allowing athletes to finance their education through wrestling.
Thanks to this opportunity, athletes can enjoy a unique experience that offers many advantages compared to other systems, such as:
Balancing studies and athletics
Traveling across the United States and Canada for free with the sports team
Earning an academic degree from a U.S. or Canadian institution
Learning perfect English
Meeting people from many different countries
Living unforgettable experiences
For all these reasons, wrestling opens up a world of possibilities for student-athletes.
Wrestling scholarships in the United States and Canada
Each athletic league has a maximum number of wrestling scholarships that can be distributed. Within these limits, each school decides how to allocate the available scholarship funds as they see fit.
Coaches distribute the funds by offering a mix of full and partial wrestling scholarships to team athletes. Usually, only the top athletes on the team receive wrestling scholarships.
There are also other opportunities known as “walk-on” positions, which allow athletes to join the team without receiving a wrestling scholarship in the United States or Canada. After spending a year in this position, depending on the athlete’s performance, they may earn a wrestling scholarship for the following years.
Limit on scholarships per team
The number of wrestling scholarships available at each educational institution varies from school to school. Each athletic league sets a maximum number of wrestling scholarships that can be offered, but schools may choose to offer fewer scholarships than that limit if they wish.
A clear example is the Ivy League universities (academically prestigious institutions such as Harvard) that do not offer athletic scholarships.
Additionally, wrestling is a sport where coaches can divide the total number of scholarships among team members.
For example, in NCAA Division I men’s wrestling, coaches can split the equivalent of 12.6 scholarships among as many players as they choose.
On the other hand, in NCAA Division I women’s wrestling, programs can offer up to 18 full scholarships, meaning that athletes with the appropriate level may have the opportunity to receive a full wrestling scholarship.
How does the process of obtaining wrestling scholarships in the United States and Canada work?
The goal of Awex Education is to help athletes from all over the world access educational institutions in the United States and Canada through athletic and/or academic scholarships. That’s why we strive to find the best schools for each athlete and to secure the highest possible athletic and/or academic scholarship.
Here’s an overview of the process of obtaining a wrestling scholarship at an American institution. The first part is where the athlete must work to achieve the best athletic and academic results possible:
Reach the highest wrestling level possible: The higher your athletic level, the greater your chances of earning a wrestling scholarship in the U.S. or Canada. You’ll also have a wider range of schools to choose from. It’s important to plan your wrestling training and competition schedule to achieve your best possible results.
Reach the highest academic level possible: Focusing on your studies is essential to achieve a strong academic profile. This increases your options and can also make you eligible for academic scholarships, reducing your annual costs. Proper preparation for the TOEFL and SAT exams well in advance is fundamental.
The second part of the process is handled by Awex Education. It’s very important to contact Awex Education early and begin preparations ahead of time to increase your chances of securing an athletic scholarship in the U.S. or Canada, giving you more options to choose from. We recommend starting the process 1–2 years before your intended start date.
We analyze each case individually based on the athlete’s wrestling level, academic performance, and personal goals. At Awex Education, we provide this evaluation FREE of charge and meet with the athlete and their family to explain the real possibilities. Once the family decides to begin the process, we take care of the following steps:
We study each athlete’s case, including their athletic level, academic standing, and preferences regarding schools. We then find the best options that match their academic, athletic, and financial profile.
We create a personal follow-up plan for each athlete, outlining the steps to follow, exam dates, preparation timelines (depending on the league), and short-, medium-, and long-term goals.
We provide support for SAT and TOEFL registration.
We help with the creation of the sports video, offering advice and guidance to ensure high quality — since this video plays a key role in recruitment. We handle the final video editing.
With the final video, we create an academic and athletic profile for the athlete, which is then shared with wrestling coaches.
We begin contacting schools that fit the athlete’s and family’s preferences. We work with most educational institutions in the U.S. and Canada, across all states that align with the athlete’s profile.
We negotiate with each coach or school to secure the highest scholarship and best conditions possible.
We present a report with several options in advance, including details such as: school name, location, size, academic and athletic level, tuition cost without scholarship, scholarship amount, and estimated annual cost.
We offer multiple options within the family’s budget, ensuring several good alternatives to choose from.
We advise and guide the athlete and their family in selecting the right school — though the final decision always belongs to the family.
We handle the signing of the final scholarship offer.
We complete the academic league admission process (NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA).
We assist with the school admission process (submission of grades, SAT/TOEFL scores, and other paperwork).
We organize meal plans and housing arrangements.
We assist in obtaining medical insurance in the U.S. or Canada.
We manage the student visa process for each athlete.
We coordinate flights and arrival logistics, ensuring the athlete has support upon arrival.
We offer arrival assistance with guidance on essentials (sending money, banking, first-day questions, etc.).
We help with on-campus work opportunities.
We provide ongoing support throughout the athlete’s stay in the U.S., including help with school transfers, paperwork, or any other needs — all at NO extra cost.
When students reach their junior or senior year of college, we offer those interested a course at a British university to prepare them for the job market and help them secure employment opportunities.
In addition to all this, a key factor that makes our service stand out is our personal and close approach. We maintain constant communication with our athletes and their families through WhatsApp or phone calls, and in urgent situations, we can be contacted at any time outside office hours.
Academic requirements
Another important factor in getting into a good educational institution is the academic aspect — your high school grades, as well as your SAT and TOEFL scores. If two students have a similar athletic level but there are significant differences in their academic performance, the coach will usually offer the wrestling scholarship to the stronger student academically.
This is because students must meet certain minimum requirements, making the academic side just as important as wrestling in several ways:
Athletic eligibility: You must meet minimum grade requirements on exams to be accepted into sports leagues.
To be accepted into schools, the athlete must meet the academic requirements on the SAT and TOEFL exams.
You can even earn an academic scholarship that can be added to your athletic scholarship, resulting in a higher total scholarship amount. To obtain academic scholarships, students must have good grades and strong SAT and TOEFL results.
Therefore, the higher your grades, the more opportunities you’ll have and the greater the amount of scholarship money you can receive from the institution.
Each school or coach has different minimum academic requirements. That’s why Awex Education analyzes each athlete’s academic and athletic profile to find the institution that best fits each student-athlete.
What level of wrestling is required?
In the United States and Canada, there are over a thousand educational institutions with wrestling teams that are part of various leagues. Within this wide range of schools, the level of wrestling programs varies greatly.
Wrestling programs tend to offer a larger number of scholarships to women than to men, which means that the chances of obtaining a wrestling scholarship are higher for women. Scholarships are awarded based on each athlete’s athletic and academic level.
Coaches usually stay in contact with athletes one or even two years before they start college. However, final decisions are typically made based on performances from the year before starting in the U.S. or Canada, when students are in their final year of high school.
Although all athletes specialize in a specific event, coaches look for versatile athletes who can compete in multiple events within their field.
In the middle- and long-distance categories, opportunities can be even greater, since these athletes can compete in both cross-country and track events. For this reason, coaches often show more interest in these athletes and may offer higher scholarship amounts.
What do wrestling scholarships cover?
Wrestling scholarships in the United States and Canada cover a percentage of the institution’s expenses listed below. In the case of a full wrestling scholarship, all of these costs are covered:
