We answer all your questions 😚
Who can participate in the one-year academic program abroad?
The main selection criteria for admission are: that you are a middle school or high school student in your home country, your level of English, your age, that your school grades are above 6.5, your athletic ability, and your motivation to be an exchange student.
Please note that we only accept a small number of students each year, so you will need to do your best to improve your English level and academic results before coming. We assure you that your efforts will be worth it.
What will happen if I get sick while I'm away?
First of all, remember that you will not be alone. At the center, you will have medical staff who will assess your condition, and you will also have local support to help you at all times. The price of any of our programs includes comprehensive medical and accident insurance coverage. Before you leave for the United States, we will explain what you need to do if you need to use the insurance policy. It is very simple and safe.
Will I be able to travel during my stay?
Yes, as long as your legal guardians give their permission. During your school year in the United States, you will likely have several opportunities to travel and discover new places. Your school may organize field trips that you can sign up for, or your local coordinator may suggest a trip or activity with other international students in the area.
Will I be able to make new friends as a foreigner?
Although it may be difficult at first, you will soon meet many people. Our students always boast about how easy it is to make friends, socialize, and how friendly and pleasant people tend to be with them.
Little by little, you will be able to make new friends at your high school, on sports teams, or in activity clubs that you join. Some American schools that accept exchange students have a welcome program designed by the school itself to facilitate integration. It is common to have a “student mentor” who is responsible for showing the campus and helping a specific student integrate. Believe me, the hard part won’t be making friends, but saying goodbye to them when you return home.
Will I be able to return to Spain to spend Christmas or any other holiday period?
With your J1 exchange student visa, you won’t be able to. Luckily, we work with the F1 visa, which allows you to return to Spain during your vacation period and your parents to visit you as well.
If you don't get B1, could you still go on exchange for your first year of high school?
To study in the US, we will have to take some tests, as Spanish qualifications are not valid. Depending on the student’s level, we can take the DUOLINGO, TOEFL, or SAT exams.
Is it possible to obtain a full scholarship?
Although it is possible, it is not common, as there are few full scholarships available. You will need to consider whether you and your family can make an investment of between $15,000 and $20,000.
What does your program include?
Our program includes accommodation, meals, tuition, extracurricular activities or sports, and insurance.
Can I apply for a scholarship if I am not Spanish?
At Awex, we work with students from all over the world.
What is the difference between an F1 visa and a J1 visa?
On the one hand, the J1 visa is granted by the US government to a limited number of students so that they can go to the US to study for an academic year. However, they do not have the option of choosing where they go: neither the area nor the school.
With the J1 visa, it is the American family who chooses the international student who will live with them for the next year, based on the personality and interests that the student has reflected in their cover letter. Families host students on a voluntary basis. Depending on the location of the family, a school close to the student’s family is assigned, so the student cannot choose the state, area, or school.
The main feature of this visa is the cost, as it is an affordable program for families on a tighter budget who want to give their children the opportunity to study for a school year in the United States.
The F1 visa, on the other hand, is more expensive. Students can choose which school they want to attend, based on the activities offered by the schools or the area or state they want. From there, they are assigned a family that lives near the school or the possibility of residing in the school’s own residence.
Host families of students with F1 visas do receive financial compensation (although not very high) for hosting the student during their school stay in the United States.
What do I need beforehand to gain admission to an American university?
Coaches measure athletic ability based on several factors:
- Official scores or times.
- National and international competitions.
- Demonstration videos.
- Awex Education Assessment
With all this information, at Awex Education we assess each athlete and their family and work with educational institutions that match their athletic and academic level, with good chances of obtaining an athletic scholarship and playing on the team.
What course can I study in the United States?
You can study any level of secondary school or high school, although it is common to start from the third year of secondary school onwards.
Can I choose the city I want to go to or my school?
With the F1 visa for private schools, there is much more flexibility, allowing you to choose the state, school, and live in a residence hall.
When should you start the process?
It is advisable to start them in September or October of the previous year, as this will give us time to prepare the paperwork and exams well in advance so that there are no unforeseen circumstances.
What is the selection process for acceptance into the program?
At Awex, we will conduct a personal interview to assess and evaluate your level of English, your athletic and academic abilities, and your motivation to live this “experience.” We will then send you a scholarship proposal at no cost and with no obligation. If the proposal suits you, we will prepare a contract to be signed by both parties. Once the contract is signed, we will begin the process of finding the center that best suits you. We will select three options from which you can choose, and the final center will send you a letter of acceptance. At Awex, we will guide you before, during, and after the entire process.
What is the average level of English required to study in the US?
You should have an intermediate level that allows you to communicate with your teachers and classmates. Don’t worry about not being fluent; that’s one of the goals you’ll achieve with this experience.
When does the course start?
It depends on the state you live in, but in general classes start between mid-August and early September and end throughout the month of June.
Will there be more international students at the school?
Yes, you will meet a small number of students of different nationalities. At Awex, we make sure we work with schools that have a low percentage of Spanish-speaking international students so that the experience is completely immersive.
Which subjects should I choose in order to have the course validated?
The Ministry of Education regulates the validation of studies completed abroad. You must enroll in a minimum of four compulsory subjects and complete your course with some of the many electives offered by the US education system. At Awex, we advise you at all times so that you know which subjects to take to avoid any problems when validating your studies in Spain.
Is a visa required to study in the US, and who processes it?
Yes, we will work with the F1 visa type. At Awex, we will accompany you throughout the entire application process so that you don’t encounter any problems.
Who will pick me up when I arrive at my destination?
Usually, someone from the center where you enrolled will be waiting for you at the departure gate. You won’t have to worry about anything other than finding your boarding gate at the airport, and someone will be waiting for you upon arrival.
Are there any scholarships available to study in the US?
At Awex, we secure large scholarships thanks to the students’ profiles and the agreements we have with the schools themselves.
