We answer all your questions 😚
Why the United States and Canada?
The American education system is the only one that allows students to combine competitive sports with university studies. In addition, thanks to athletic scholarships, athletes can cover a percentage of their academic expenses. In many cases, it is even possible to combine athletic and academic scholarships to further reduce the total cost.
Schools in the United States offer athletic scholarships to members of their teams, allowing student-athletes to finance their education through sports.
This opportunity provides athletes with a unique experience that offers many advantages compared to the Spanish system: combining studies and sports, traveling for free across the United States with the team, earning a degree from an American institution, mastering English, meeting people from many different countries, and living unforgettable experiences.
All of this opens up a world of possibilities for athletes through the power of sports.
Sports scholarships in the United States and Canada
ChatGPT Plus
Each athletic league has a maximum number of scholarships that can be awarded, and within those limits, each school decides how to distribute the available funds.
Coaches at educational institutions allocate the scholarship funds by offering full and partial athletic scholarships to members of their teams. Typically, an athlete must be among the best on the team to receive an athletic scholarship.
There are also other opportunities known as “walk-on” positions. These allow athletes to join the team without initially receiving an athletic scholarship in the United States or Canada. After a year in this position, depending on the athlete’s performance, they may earn a scholarship for the following years.
How does the process of obtaining athletic scholarships in the United States and Canada work?
The Goal of Awex Education
The goal of Awex Education is to help athletes from all over the world gain access to educational institutions in the United States and Canada through athletic and/or academic scholarships.
That’s why we work to find the best schools for each athlete and to secure the highest possible scholarship, whether athletic, academic, or a combination of both.
The Process of Obtaining an Athletics Scholarship
Below we explain how the process of obtaining an athletics scholarship at an American educational institution works.
The first part of the process depends on the athlete, who must work to achieve the best possible athletic and academic results:
1. Achieving the highest possible athletic level:
The higher the athlete’s performance, the greater their chances of receiving an athletics scholarship in the U.S. or Canada. A higher level also means more options to choose from.
It’s important to plan training sessions and competition schedules strategically to achieve the best possible marks.
2. Achieving the highest possible academic level:
It’s equally important to focus on academics to reach the highest level possible. This will increase available options and may also lead to academic scholarships, reducing annual costs.
Proper preparation for the TOEFL and SAT exams well in advance is essential.
The Part Managed by Awex Education
At Awex Education, we take care of the second part of the process.
It’s very important to contact us well in advance and start preparing early.
By doing so, we increase the chances of obtaining an athletic scholarship in the United States or Canada and open up more available options to choose from.
We recommend starting the process 1 to 2 years before the desired start date in the U.S. or Canada.
We analyze each case individually, assessing the athlete’s chances of obtaining an athletics scholarship based on their athletic level, academic background, and family expectations.
At Awex Education, we offer this evaluation FREE of charge and with no obligation. We then meet with the athlete and family to explain the real possibilities.
Once the family decides to move forward, we take care of the following steps:
We study each athlete’s individual case, including athletic level, academic results, and preferences regarding schools. We look for the options that best fit each athlete’s athletic, academic, and financial profile.
We create a personal progress plan for each athlete. This includes planning the steps to follow, exam dates, preparation timelines (depending on the league’s requirements), and short-, medium-, and long-term goals.
We provide support for SAT and TOEFL exam registration.
We assist with the creation of the athletic video, offering guidance and tips to make a strong highlight video — a key factor in the recruitment process. We take care of the final video editing.
With the final video ready, we create an academic and athletic profile for the athlete to send to coaches.
We begin contacting schools that match the athlete’s and family’s preferences. We work with a wide range of educational institutions across the U.S. and Canada that fit each athlete’s profile.
We negotiate with coaches and schools to obtain the highest scholarship and best possible conditions for each athlete.
We present a report with several options in advance so the family can make an informed decision. The report includes details such as school name, location, size, academic level, athletic level, tuition before and after scholarship, and total annual cost.
We always offer several options within the family’s budget, allowing them to choose the best fit.
We assist the athlete and family in choosing the right school, offering advice and guidance — although the final decision always belongs to the family.
We manage the signing of the final offer with the chosen institution.
We handle the academic league admission process (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA).
We manage the admission process with the selected school, including transcript submissions, SAT/TOEFL score reports, and other admission documents.
We arrange meal and housing plans for the athlete.
We handle the medical insurance process in the United States and Canada.
We take care of the student visa application for the U.S. or Canada.
We organize flights and arrival logistics, ensuring the athlete is supported upon arrival.
We assist with arrival guidance, helping with money transfers, bank cards, and first-day questions upon arrival in the U.S. or Canada.
We help with on-campus job opportunities when available.
We provide ongoing support throughout the athlete’s stay in the U.S. or Canada for anything they may need — school changes, questions, paperwork, or other issues — all with NO additional cost.
When students reach their third or fourth year of university, we also offer interested athletes a course at a British university that prepares them for the professional world and helps them secure job offers.
Our Personal Approach
Beyond all of this, what truly sets Awex Education apart is our personal and close relationship with our athletes and their families.
We maintain constant communication through WhatsApp or phone calls, and in case of emergencies, families can contact us at any time, even outside office hours.
Who can participate in the one-year academic program abroad?
The main selection criteria for admission are: being a high school student in your home country, your English level, your age, having a school grade average above 6.5, your athletic level, and your motivation to become an exchange student.
Please note that we only accept a limited number of students each year, so you should make every effort beforehand to improve your English skills and academic performance.
We assure you — your hard work will be worth it.
What will happen if I get sick while I'm away?
First of all, remember that you won’t be alone. At your school, there will be medical staff available to evaluate your condition, and you will also have local support to assist you at any time.
All of our programs include a comprehensive medical and accident insurance policy in the program fee. Before your departure to the United States, we will explain exactly what to do if you ever need to use your insurance — it’s a simple and secure process.
Will I be able to travel during my stay?
Yes, as long as your legal guardians give their authorization. During your school year in the United States, you will likely have several opportunities to travel and discover new places.
Your school may organize excursions you can join, or your local coordinator might invite you to take part in trips or activities with other international students in the area.
Will I be able to make new friends as a foreigner?
Although it may feel challenging at first, you’ll soon meet lots of people. Our students always talk about how easy it is to make friends, socialize, and how friendly and welcoming people usually are.
Little by little, you’ll start making new friends at your High School, in sports teams, or through the clubs and activities you join. Many American schools that accept exchange students have welcome programs designed to help international students integrate more easily. It’s also common for schools to assign a “student buddy”, who is responsible for showing you around campus and helping you settle in.
Believe me — the hardest part won’t be making friends, it will be saying goodbye to them when you return home.
Will I be able to return to Spain to spend Christmas or any other holiday period?
With a J1 exchange student visa, you wouldn’t be able to. Luckily, we work with the F1 visa, which allows you to return to Spain during your vacation periods, and also lets your parents visit you during your stay.
If you don't get B1, could you still go on exchange for your first year of high school?
To study in the United States, you’ll need to take certain exams, as Spanish qualifications are not directly valid there. Depending on the student’s level, you may take the Duolingo, TOEFL, or SAT exam.
Is it possible to obtain a full scholarship?
While it’s possible, it’s not very common, as full scholarships are quite rare. You and your family should consider whether you can make an investment of between $15,000 and $20,000.
What does your program include?
Our program includes housing, meals, tuition, extracurricular activities or your chosen sport, and insurance.
Can I apply for a scholarship if I am not Spanish?
At Awex, we work with students from all over the world.
What is the difference between an F1 visa and a J1 visa?
On one hand, the J1 visa is granted by the U.S. government to a limited number of students so they can study in the United States for an academic year. However, students do not have the option to choose their location or school.
With a J1 visa, the American host family selects the international student who will live with them for the upcoming year, based on the personality and interests described in the student’s application letter. Host families welcome students voluntarily. The school is then assigned based on the family’s location, so the student cannot choose the state, area, or school.
The main feature of this visa is its lower cost, making it an economical option for families with a tighter budget who want to give their children the opportunity to study a year in the United States.
On the other hand, the F1 visa is more expensive. Students can choose which school to attend based on the activities offered by the school or the state/area they prefer. Once the school is selected, a host family is assigned nearby, or the student may have the option to live in the school dormitory.
Host families for F1 students receive financial compensation (although not very high) for hosting the student during their academic stay in the United States.
What do I need beforehand to gain admission to an American university?
Coaches assess an athlete’s sports level using several factors:
Official results or times.
National and international competitions.
Demonstration video.
Awex Education evaluation.
Using all this information, at Awex Education we evaluate each athlete and their family, and work with schools that match their athletic and academic level, offering good opportunities to obtain an athletic scholarship and join the team.
Academic requirements
Another important factor in gaining admission to a good school is academics — including high school grades, SAT scores, and TOEFL results. If two students have a similar athletic level but significant differences in academic performance, the coach will usually award the athletic scholarship to the stronger student academically.
This is because students must meet certain minimum requirements, making academics just as important as athletics in several ways:
Athletic eligibility: Minimum grades are required to be accepted into sports leagues.
School admission: Athletes must meet the academic requirements on the SAT and TOEFL exams to be admitted to the school.
Academic scholarships: Strong grades and high SAT/TOEFL scores can also lead to academic scholarships, which can be combined with an athletic scholarship to increase the total scholarship amount.
Therefore, the higher the grades, the more options the athlete will have and the greater the financial support from the school.
Each school or coach has different minimum academic standards. That’s why at Awex Education, we carefully evaluate each student’s academic and athletic profile to find the school that best fits them.
What do athletic scholarships cover?
Athletic scholarships in the United States and Canada cover a percentage of the school expenses listed below. If you receive a full athletic scholarship, all of these expenses will be covered:
Tuition and fees
Books
Housing (dormitory or apartment)
Meals
Medical insurance
In addition, all students at the school, whether they have a scholarship or not, always have their athletic-related expenses covered, including:
Training sessions
Sports equipment
Official competitions
Travel to competitions (transportation, accommodation, and meals)
Academic tutors if help is needed with classes
Sports medicine and physiotherapy
How do American coaches measure the level of their students?
Coaches assess an athlete’s sports level using several factors:
Official results or times
National and international competitions
Demonstration video
Awex Education evaluation
Using all this information, at Awex Education we evaluate each athlete and their family, and work with schools that match their athletic and academic level, offering good opportunities to obtain an athletic scholarship and join the team.
What course can I study in the United States?
You can study any level of ESO or Bachillerato, although it is most common to enroll from 3rd year of ESO onwards.
Can I choose the city I want to go to or my school?
With an F1 visa for a private school, there is much more flexibility, allowing you to choose the state, the school, and live in the school dormitory.
When should you start the process?
It is recommended to start them in September or October of the previous year, as this allows enough time to prepare all procedures and exams in advance, ensuring there are no unexpected issues.
What is the selection process for acceptance into the program?
At Awex, we will conduct a personal interview to assess your English level, athletic and academic performance, and your motivation to undertake this experience.
Afterwards, we will send you a scholarship proposal at no cost and with no obligation. If the proposal suits you, we will prepare a contract, which must be signed by both parties. Once the contract is signed, we will begin the process of finding the school that best fits your profile. We will select three options, from which the final school will send you your letter of acceptance.
At Awex, we will guide you before, during, and after the entire process.
What is the average level of English required to study in the US?
You should have an intermediate level that allows you to communicate with your teachers and classmates. Don’t worry if you’re not fluent — improving your fluency is one of the goals you will achieve through this experience.
When does the course start?
It depends on the state you live in, but in general, classes start between mid-August and early September and finish throughout the month of June.
Will there be more international students at the school?
Yes, you will be with a small number of students from different nationalities. At Awex, we make sure to work with schools that have a low percentage of Spanish-speaking international students, ensuring a fully immersive experience.
Which subjects should I choose in order to have the course validated?
The Ministry of Education regulates the validation of studies completed abroad. You will need to enroll in a minimum of four mandatory subjects and complete your course with some of the many electives offered by the U.S. education system. At Awex, we provide guidance throughout the process so you know exactly which subjects to take, ensuring there are no issues when validating your credits in Spain.
Is a visa required to study in the US, and who processes it?
Yes, we will work with the F1 visa. At Awex, we guide you through the entire application process to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Who will pick me up when I arrive at my destination?
Most commonly, a representative from your school will be waiting for you at the departure gate. You won’t need to worry about anything except finding your gate at the airport, and upon arrival, someone will already be there to meet you.
Are there any scholarships available to study in the US?
At Awex, we secure substantial scholarships thanks to both the students’ profiles and the partnership agreements we have with the schools.
